The PSAT/NMSQT® (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a practice version of the SAT.

Taking the PSAT helps you prepare for the SAT or ACT, and a strong score during your junior year can qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Each year, more than $180 million in scholarships are awarded to high-scoring students.

About the Test:

  • Length: 2 hours, 45 minutes
  • Sections: Reading, Writing, and Math
  • Highest Score: 1520

Why It Matters:
The PSAT measures what you’re learning in high school and the skills you’ll need for college success.

Who Can Take It?

  • The PSAT is offered once a year in mid-October.
  • Students sign up in September.
  • The fee is $18.
  • Sophomores and juniors may take the test, but only junior-year scores count toward the National Merit Scholarship Program.
