Tamara Tyrrell Bio

Greetings to my district page. This page gives us another opportunity to communicate and get to know who your student’s teachers are.

My name is Tammy Tyrrell and I teach English as a second language at the high school. I teach ESL English, US History and co-teach with other teachers as needed. I am fortunate to be able to work with students of many cultures and backgrounds. I learn so much from my students for learning never stops for any of us. My goal is to take my students where ever they are in their language acquisition and bring them forward.

Teaching is a second career for me. My first profession was that of a drug/alcohol counselor. I graduated from St. Mary’s College in Winona, MN in 1982. Twenty years ago I was lucky enough to be a teacher’s aide in the At Risk/ ESL classroom at the high school. I returned to school and earned my teaching certificate from the University of Iowa in 2003. I then went on to earn my English as a Second Language endorsement in 2005. I earned my Masters degree in May of 2011.

I am married with 4 children and six grandchildren. I love spending time with my family and being outdoors. I enjoy taking classes because I love to learn new things. One of my favorite quotes about education is: “Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire,” by William Butler Yeats. My hope is that my students will not only remember what they were taught, but how they were treated.
